Mountainboard Progression?
Posted On 02/03/2008 15:49:29 by freddy
Does anyone remember the old mountainboard community? It used to be really good. There was a chat feature, videos, and everything. There was often people in the chat too. Many times it was the really good pro riders too. The whole site was pretty awesome.

I think the web address was www.mountainboarders.us  I don't think it has existed for awhile now. Does anyone know what happened to it? I'm not putting this site down at all. It is very close to what mountainboarders.us was like, but mountainboarders.us had so many people and was so active, and this one has not arrived at that level yet.

also there was the mountainboard magazine. Well it started as all terrain boarding magazine, but changed its name to mountainboarding magazine or something like that. They decided that there should be one name for it instead of tons to stop the confusion. That magazine was really cool. I was subscribed for quite awhile to it, but then I wasnt subscribed and I guess the magazine died. Does anyone know what happened there?

Many of the companies who produced mountainboards no longer do it either. It seems like there are more leaving than comming in.

A few years ago I figured this would do one of two things:
progress very quickly, become popular, and be considered right up there with the other extreme sports (skateboarding, bmx, snowboarding, etc).

OR

I thought it'd become an insanely popular fad for a year and then drop off of its popularity as fast as it came.

neither of those have really happened and sometimes it seems like its going backwards.

Now that i've said all that, its not all completely true. The sport has gone down in some areas but has done some other things that show progression.

There was the mountainboard movie on the disney channel. I thought that may spark something huge, but for the most part it hasnt. Either way its cool to see a movie out there about mountainboarding.

The riders doing this sport have progressed quite well. Years ago some tricks that seemed really crazy are now being done everywhere and the envelope is being pushed.

The sport has progressed well in other areas too.

the question is: why is it not booming like I (and many others) expected? Maybe I'm just saying this too early and its about to hit big. Maybe this is the calm before the storm. Maybe I'm all together wrong.

What could cause this? maybe people get the idea that its too dangerous. When people hear anything about mountainboarding they associate it with pain. While it can be a dangerous sport, it really is as dangerous as you make it.

I dont want anyone to take this as me offending the sport or anything. This whole blog just started with me wanting to know what happened to mountainboarders.us and mountainboarding magazine.

I now just want to see what some of your thoughts are. If I'm wrong or if you agree. Do you have any points?

I very well could be wrong.

This site actually got it's start way before boardgen. One of the mbs riders started boardgen, which is why I'm guessing they received advertising from MBS. The two sites look similar because it looks like they decided to use the same platform that ATBRiders is using.

We are going to see if MBS will feature ATBRiders in a future newsletter like they did with boardgen .

yeah i guess that is true. I just thought it was odd how the whole thing was almost identical to this site.

i guess what this site could use is some kinda advertisement like mbs does for that other site.

boardgen focuses on all board sports.  this one is mountainboarding specific.

Thanks everyone for the replies. I'll try to keep my aimless blogging to a minimum here though lol.

i have a few comments on your comments though.

I do that thing where i wait til the very last minute possible to do my homework and stuff too. I'm pretty good at it too. I can't get motivated enough until its either then or never. The one thing that does hurt is my sleep. I never sleep.

and I understand how this is probably i recession and it will climb back up. I guess I contributed in a way to this. I kinda stopped mountainboarding and stopped subscribing to the magazine and stopped going to the mountainboarders.us site. So maybe i'm just part of what a lot of people did. It wasn't as much of losing interest, it was more about losing time. (school, sports, girlfriend, college now)

BUT i'm ready to get back on the board. I am going to have fun this spring and summer.

and finally another thing i noticed about this whole mountainboard community thing. Has anyone seen that other site that mbs advertises that is a mountainboard community. I think some of the pros are on it or something. The funny thing is that it looks EXACTLY like this site. The layout, links and everything.

in my opinion I think having two communities like this is not the best idea. (especially since they are so similar). While for many things, competition is really good, but I think a good idea would be to merge these two sites.

I know that may not be in some people's best interests and may not be a real possibility, but If either web address would take you to one community it would allow for a bigger community that wasnt split up. Also I think it would help with popularizing this community because it would have support from mbs.

I'm not saying this has to be done for me to be happy or that there is anything wrong with this site btw. I just think it would be a good option to consider. From what i've seen of that other site, it looks identical to this one.

that site is www.boardgen.com

Hi Freddy!

We agree with you that there are plenty of mountainboarding skeletons out there. It seems many have fallen, and there are now only a few left standing. It looked like there was a mountainboarding boom for a short period, that was followed by a crash. While the sport is steadily growing, it does seem like it regressed for a time.

While we were looking around the internet, we couldn't find any site that pulled things together for the sport of mountainboarding. We created ATBRiders in hopes that it would develop to be a hot spot for mountainboarders worldwide. We don't know why that other site closed down, but we are hoping that this site will fill it's place and even exceed it in the future.

We want to thank you and the rest of the members of ATBRiders for being a part of it.

We have big plans for this site, and are constantly working on it to make it a better place for mountainboarders. Expect lots of new features to be added to the site in the future!

8 am classes are a pain. So hard to get up for.

Also, who wants to write a paper? They are boring, and time consuming. When I have an assignment do, all I do is procrastinate untill the very possible last second, and then I frantically type it out in the last hour and then run to class. You would think it would be affecting my grade, but honestly, I recieved a better grade for a paper that took me five hours to write than a paper I put off and wrote in an hour.

Anyway, what I was going to say is most of the time when I go to ask someone if they want to go mountainboarding with me, many of them say, "Oh man that looks like it would hurt," or "I'd kill myself on that thing."  The next question is usually, "how do you stop?" I think more people would try it and like it better if I had a mountainboard that had a brake on it for them to use.

I still have had tons of people try it, and a large percentage of the people that tried it loved it. One even went out and bought his own, and even won a core 8 from the MBS monthly drawing.

While many people comment about how dangerous it is and don't want to try it, there are a lot of people that want to try it and love it when they do.

Whenever I ride my board around town,  I frequently have people ask me about it.

I have often wondered why mountainboarding didn't shoot off.  I mean look at that freakin wave board. You couldn't find those things anywhere a while ago.  Now they are even being sold in wal-mart because Razor now makes their own version of it called the Ripstick.

I think mountainboarding just needs to be promoted more.

Yeah I agree. There is an interest in the sport. I may have a bit of an unfair bias because I live in southern illinois, where i've never seen another mountainboard besides mine.

I was just noticing some of the things like the mountainboarders.us, magazine, and some companies going out.

I personally think if supply went up then demand would go up. Where if it was more accessible itwould become more popular too.

Also most of the time people see a mountainboard they are pretty interested.

i'm sorry i went on this tangent of everything, but i suppose it was more interesting than my original plan and post (what happened to mountainboarders.us? and what happened to mountainboarding magazine)

those two things were great for the sport in my opinion. If they could be recreated (like this site hopefully some day) I think it would help the sport a ton. When you have a magazine or a website you see alot it makes you want to go out and ride a lot more, thus giving the sport exposure.

annnnyways, i dont know why i keep typing on this and stuff. I have a huge paper to write tonite before my 8am class tomorrow.

02/03/2008 23:56:48

Honestly, I think it's going to boom eventually.  I think the foundation for mountainboarding has been laid, and now, all it needs is more exposure.  I think that the reach for mountainboarding is humoungus.  It is a great crossover sport for snowboarders and skateboarders.  There are tons of skateboarders and snowboarders out there.

When searching the net, I often run into people asking questions like, "where can I buy a mountainboard?" The desire to mountainboard is there, I just think that mountainboarding isn't yet an easily accessible sport.  Many people want a mountainboard, and I am sure many more would buy a mountainboard, if they had easy access to one.

If you look at the history of skateboarding, it's popularity dipped and exploded over the years.  It was started in the 1950's, and now look at it! Mountainboarding got it's start in the 1970's, I think the sport just needs some time before it catches on.

I'm not sure about what happened to that mountainboarding website, or the magazine, but I'm guessing there just wasn't a strong enough mountainboarding market to cover their costs.

Overall, I think mountainboarding is steadily growing.  After the release of the Disney mountainboarding movie, I noticed that everywhere I looked the Lil' bomber mountainboard by GI was sold out for quite some time.

I think it just needs some more time and promotion for it to really take off!
